New wave of knowledge work – challenge or a chance?

P35-PI259: Thursday 14 June 10:00 – 12.00

Keywords: Knowledge work, digitalization, socio-technical work environment, wellbeing, information ergonomics

Digitalization changes the old ways of working, whether we want it or not. If the opportunities offered by digitalization can fully be exploited, there is huge potential for flexible, distributed and mobile knowledge work. It may enhance the activation of cooperation networks, more intensive customer involvement and joint value creation processes. However, technology and digitalization may change the context ant the content faster than individuals and organizations can adapt to. Thus, as the flipped side of the coin, digitalization may also cause ineffectiveness, attitude and motivation problems, information and work overload due poor macroergonomics – all these leading to performance gap and decrease in wellbeing at work.

In order to understand and actively affect this multifaceted phenomenon in knowledge work context, we need more research – case studies, theoretical reviews, surveys, pilots etc. – that shed light on this complex, but timely issue.

The topics of this track may include but are not restricted to:

  • Future working environments (physical, virtual and social environment)
  • Digitalization of work
  • New ways of working
  • Spatiality
  • Polychronicity
  • Multi-located, mobile,”flexible” knowledge work
  • Knowledge work and information ergonomics
  • Performance management and measurement in knowledge work
  • Work flow and welfare in knowledge work
  • Attitudes towards digitalization of work
  • Digi competences at work
  • Service processes, customer experience and customer value creation in knowledge work
