Living conditions for development in Western China

The project aims to understand global challenges such as good governance, socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, social security, innovation and climate change mitigation in China’s Western region.

As instrumental input to poverty alleviation strategies and further development plans for China’s Western region, CASTED and Fafo propose to build on the previous work in Western China in 2004 to conduct a living conditions survey in the four Western provinces Shaanxi, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan. The project aims to understand global challenges such as good governance, socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, social security, innovation and climate change mitigation in China’s Western region. It will produce high-quality and reliable information for Chinese policy making in the four provinces and will focus particularly on the Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the project will provide useful input on Chinas progress towards a “Moderately Prosperous Society (小康社会) by 2020”.
