Former experiences shape employers’ view on hiring immigrants

En ny artikkel, hvor Jon Rogstad er medforfatter, gransker hvorvidt tidligere erfaringer spiller inn når de skal vurdere arbeidssøkere med minoritetsbakgrunn.

Intervjuer med et utvalg arbeidsgivere indikerer at de oppdaterer og endrer egne holdninger basert på erfaringene de gjør seg. Forskerne tolker dette som et uttrykk for at generelle stereotypier ikke er så fastlåste at det stenger for justering basert egen erfaring. Det kan bety at generelle stereotypier om minoriteter gradvis endres. Samtidig skal det relativt få negative erfaringer til for at arbeidsgivere «lukker porten» for jobbsøkere fra samme gruppe.

This article, co-written by Jon Rogstad, explores the relationship between labor market discrimination, stereotypes and employers’ experiences with immigrant workers. The article finds that experience – or lack thereof – matters distinctively when considering applications from immigrant workers.

Thus, Norwegian employers seemed to update their attitudes, which implies their decision making is flexible, allowing positive experiences to influence hiring decisions. At the same time, their consideration seems to be quite sensitive to negative experiences.
