In this report we look at obligations and problems confronting people in everyday life in the private sphere, and how these affect behaviour in the working sphere. We have in particular focused on family obligations which arise late in working life, when employees experience their parents growing old and in need of care. This generations squeeze in this stage of life is illuminated by two surveys carried out in Norway: A nationwide survey of people in the age group 45-65 years old in 2007, and a survey of a representative sample of members of the Norwegian Union of Municipal and General Employees (NUMGE) in the spring of 2008. NUMGE has been the principal sponsor for the project called "Life and work - possibilities in working life for all?" The objective is to obtain knowledge that will contribute to the modelling of politics for working life, which will open up new possibilities for good and long working careers. This report is one of six reports that are to be published by the project.
