As a consequence of the armed struggle between the Islamist group Fatah al-Islam and the Lebanese Army in and around the Nahr El-Bared Palestinian refugee camp the past 3 weeks, the majority of its population has fled their homes, many to the nearby Beddawi refugee camp.
Approximately half of the employed people in Nahr El-Bared may have completely lost their jobs and incomes as a result of the conflict. This is dramatic. While being welcomed and housed in Beddawi, the population there is in no position to cater for the displaced over a long period of time without significant external support.
The camps consist of a vulnerable group of people generally characterized by limited human resources, low labour force participation, meager incomes despite long work hours, and inadequate savings to buffer sudden income shortfalls in times of crisis such as the current one.
Based on a recent household sample survey, this brief report presents statistics on the people residing in the two refugee camps affected by the crisis.
