Sharing economy - a Nordic pilot study

In this project we will explore how changes associated with the “sharing economy”, or better coined “the intermediation economy”, can be expected to influence workers' rights and labor markets in the Nordic countries.

Together with researchers from the Nordic countries, we will explore how changes associated with the “sharing economy” can be expected to influence workers' rights and labor markets in the Nordic countries.

  • What are the rights and duties of the contracting parties?
  • How are the workers or the self-employed remunerated, and to what prices?
  • How will the increasing prevalence of companies associated with the sharing economy affect wages and working conditions in traditional firms competing in the same markets?
  • What are the magnitude, dynamics, gender composition, and economics of these emerging markets? In which sectors can such companies be expected to flourish?
  • Last, but not least, how are government authorities and the labor market parties in the respective Nordic countries approaching the regulatory dilemmas arising from these new business concepts?

Fafo will organize a workshop with researchers from Gothenburg University, Reykjavik University School of Business, CARMA Aalborg University, and University of Tempere, and write a stock-taking paper of the situation in the Nordic counties. This paper will be published in the Nordic Council of Ministers’ publication series, TemaNord.
